Year In Context

June - In England he is offered knighthood but declines in a letter to the Prime Minister.

When summer arives he takes a trip to  Purtud, a town in the Val d'Aosta on the Italian-Swiss border, and there he paints The Brook (which is of his two nieces). He also becomes fascinated with the idea of the reflective images through crystal clear mountain streams.

The Chess Game. Lady in a Bonnet and Woman in a Turkish Costume are probably of this period as well. Traveling with John is is both his sisters -- Emily and Violet with Violet's children, the de Glens and Polly Barbard.

September - Venice at the Palazzo Barbaro. Travels with Eliza Wedgwood and Emily (his sister) to Perugia and Narni where Jane and Wilfrid de Glen join their party.

September 21 thru October 26, Fracati, and in and around Rome.

Although he was trying to stop new portrait commissions, he still has  promised sittings which he works through.

He exhibits at the First Biennial Exhibition of Art, Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.
