1880                    (24 years old)
Year In Context

In January he travels to Morocco -- Tunis and Tangier where he stays for some time and paints. Having finally settled, for a bit anyway, he writes to his friend Ben Castillo about his travels thus far.

By the end of February he has returned to Paris where he takes from his North African trip and begins work in his studio on Fumée d'Ambre Gris.

March thru April he exhibits Carolus-Duran at the Society of American Artists, New York

And in May at the Paris Salon he shows  Fumée d'Ambre Gris along with Madame Edouard Pailleron (1879).

John Singer Sargent
Paris
c. 1880

Off again in August to escape the heat, Sargent travels to the Netherlands with Ralph Curtis and Franics Brooks Chadwick. He does an oil of Curtis laying on a beach. It's here that he sees first-hand the works of Frans Hals (1580-1666) -- Dutch painter and Great Master of portraiture -- which he copies.

He would later write to an art student "Begin with Frans Hals, copy and study Frans Hals, after that go to Madrid and copy Velasquez, leave Velasquez till you have got all you can get out of  Frans Hals" (Charteris  p.51)

(See essay Frans Hals)

In Mid-September he meets his family at Aix-les-Bains and travels to Venice, Italy. He sets up a studio at the Palazzo Rezzonico where he meets Giovanni Boldini and possibly James Abbott McNeill Whistler who had been there for over a year (though no record of them meeting).
(Venetian Studies)
and
(Sargent in Venice)

As the year ends he stays on in Venice -- possibly not returning to Paris until as late as March of 1881. Whenever he does return, he begins works on portraits of Dr. Samuel Jean Pozzi (1881) and the Pailleron children.
