Overview

There will be an exhibit of 43 Sargent portraits of children at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, according to this notice just found today (go to)

The press release describes the show as being the first exhibition to examine the role of child imagery in the art of one of the foremost painters of the late nineteenth century. This innovative look at a discrete segment of Sargent’s output will reveal that paintings of children represent undisputed milestones in his career and that he deliberately displayed them at strategic moments to reorient critical and public opinion of his work. The exhibition of approximately 43 works on loan from important domestic and foreign collections includes commissioned portraits, portraits of family members and friends, genre paintings, and works portraying professional child models. A full-color catalogue published by the Museum in association with Bulfinch Press accompanies this special exhibition and is available.

Exhibition Catalouge

By Barbara Dayer Gallati -- Curator of American Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and is on the art history faculty of the School of Visual Arts, New York.

The title of the book makes ironic reference to Charles Dickenss famous novel Great Expectations, and is used here to suggest how Sargents paintings of children related to the expectations associated with representations of childhood in the art and literature of Sargents day. The book also traces how Sargent ultimately advanced childhood as an artistic subject.

The book contains five essays by three notable curators and professors of fine arts, is illustrated with Sargents truly stunning and often lesser-known paintings of children, and includes Sargent family photographs, some of which are previously unpublished.
