This is one of my vary favorite paintings. The symmetry of the columns, the foreshortening, the fountain in the background with the open patio and the play of light and shades. This painting works very well on many levels and this image (along with the close-up) works  well in this medium.  

Sargent is trying to capture not the entire structure but the wondrously poetic sense of this beautiful space.
