Daintrey was an English art student in Paris who enrolled in Alexandre Cabanel's atelier in 1872 at the age of 29. He was born in 1843 and if the dating of this painting is correct, he would have been 39 when Sargent painted him.
Other artists in Cabanel's atelier in the 70's included Henry Bacon, Frank Fowler, Charles Stuart Forbes, Kenyon Cox, and Robert Hinckley. (Ormond, Richard; and Kilmurray, Elaine; John Singer Sargent, The Early Portraits, Complete Paintings Vol I.)

Thought you might like to know that Arthur Daintrey (painted by JS Sargent) was English. He was born in Petworth, Sussex, son of Arthur & Matilda Daintrey. He did spend some time in USA.
