One of the most outstanding portraits (in my opinion) is Sargent's portrait of Frederick Sleigh Robert (The Earl of Kandahar). Sargent captures the essence of this career military man (who served in India, Afghanistan and South Africa) in a most masculine portrayal of Roberts in his Field Marshal Uniform.

A truly dramatic likeness that has never really been well publicized.

Thank you for all you hard work in researching John Singer Sargent

Special thanks to Matt Davies, of Kansas City, a friend of the JSS Gallery, for helping me with this image.

The Lord Roberts scan is from an old issue of American Heritage.
