Chase's studio provided the setting for a performance organized with Sargent (who also painted Carmencita). The dancer performed twice more in Chase's studio and then agreed to pose for him, though in the end her pose and costume in the painting were based on a publicity photograph. Chase's rendering projects the energy and agility that made Carmencita a star.
